Modification of a turbulent boundary layer by circular cavities

چکیده
It is shown how well-chosen perforations in a wall flow can locally reduce skin friction drag by modifying the generation of bursts boundary layer. For this purpose, detailed hot wire layer experimental investigation past perforated plate, complemented with large eddy simulations, carried out and compared to smooth case. The plate obtained an array flush-mounted circular cavities. These cavities are disposed periodic staggered arrangement. three tested velocities, momentum thickness-based Reynolds number varies from [Formula: see text] 3380 cavity diameter spacing units, respectively, 250 1075, latter being identical both spanwise streamwise directions. mean velocity profiles evidence thickening viscous sublayer decrease as application Variable Interval Time Averaging technique highlights upward shift attenuation average burst intensity duration. Turbulent Boundary-Layer Separation
This article summarizes our present understanding of the physical behavior of two-dimensional turbulent separated flows, which occur due to adverse pressure gradients around streamlined and bluff bodies. The physical behavior of turbulence is flow dependent, so detailed experimental infor mation is needed for understanding such flows and modeling their physics for calculation methods. An earli...
متن کاملTurbulent boundary layer equations
We study a boundary layer problem for the Navier-Stokes-alpha model obtaining a generalization of the Prandtl equations conjectured to represent the averaged flow in a turbulent boundary layer. We solve the equations for the semi-infinite plate, both theoretically and numerically. The latter solutions agree with some experimental data in the turbulent boundary layer.
متن کاملA Novel Similarity Solution of Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow over a Flat Plate
In this paper, the similarity solution of turbulent boundary layer flow on the flat plate with zero pressure gradients is presented. By employing similarity variables the governing partial differential equations are transformed to ordinary ones with inconsistent coefficients and solved numerically with the use of Runge–Kutta and shooting methods in conjunction with trial and error procedure. Fo...
متن کاملBoundary Layer Adaptivity for Transonic Turbulent Flows
Simulations of turbulent flows are challenging and require tight and varying mesh spacings near the walls that depend on the turbulence models used. Semi-structured meshes are often used in the turbulent wall boundary layers due to their ability to be strongly graded and anisotropic. To reduce the discretization errors in the solution, an adaptive approach becomes essential due to the lack of g...
متن کاملEntrainment in the Turbulent Boundary Layer
By considering the entrainment properties of the turbulent boundary layer, a new and simple form of auxiliary equation has been derived for the calculation of the form parameter H. Comparison with experimental results shows very fair agreement and it should be possible to apply the method in circumstances where normal forms of the auxiliary equation would fail. Further experiment or analysis of...
